Natural ageing, is largely driven by genetics, and is the natural process that takes place within the body regardless of outside influences. The visible signs appear most commonly as dry skin, wrinkles, loss of firmness, and increased pore size.
The second cause of the visible signs of ageing is known as extrinsic ageing and occurs as a result of environmental factors such as sun exposure, pollution and smoking. While there are many external factors that contribute to skin ageing, research has shown UV and pollution to be primary causes. Both of these atmospheric factors create free radicals that ‘eat away’ at skin’s collagen and elastin, and reduce healthy cell turnover, resulting in skin roughness, wrinkling, and sagging.
To understand how skin ages, it’s important to understand how skin is configured. The skin is made up of layers - the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue - which all age in different ways. The epidermis is the skin’s outermost layer and provides a protective barrier. This layer is rich in keratin that provides toughness and water-resistance. It is where melanin (the dark pigment responsible for giving skin colour) is produced and where dead cells are shed. The dermis, or thicker middle layer, contains collagen and elastin, which provide strength, firmness and elasticity.
Beyond taking good care of your skin, the best thing you can do is appreciate the job it does and not worry too much about how it looks. Even if your skin is showing its age, it is a natural wonder that is with you throughout your life.
But if you need – or want – extra help to keep your skin in shape, a wide variety of safe treatments are available from healthcare professionals.
These can range from skin moisturizers to wrinkle fillers and botulinum toxin injections, that help reduce unwanted facial lines, to laser treatments that can tighten and tone skin or remove unwanted hair. We’re not going to look young forever, that’s just a fact of life, but it will always be important to look after our skin just as much as it looks after us.
Coastal Aesthetics can administer facial injections which either relax the muscles responsible for creating those angry frown lines, worry lines and smile lines which become more noticeable as the years go by. Facial injections of dermal filler can soften lines and dimples or plump up tissues such as the lips, cheeks and eye hollows ( tear troughs).
All these treatments can be carried out painlessly by using a skin numbing cream , filler products containing local anaesthetic or administration of local anaesthetic similar to a visit to the dentist. Conveniently carried out at an appointment time that suits you.
Why wait any longer....?
Time to put yourself first.
